At first glance, a dune might look like nothing more than a pile of sand the wind happened to shape. But beneath that simple exterior lies one of the most dynamic, fragile, and valuable ecosystems along our coastlines.
We tend to think of dunes as scenery, a backdrop to the beach. In reality, they’re doing serious environmental work. They act as natural sand reserves that help replenish beaches, and they form the first line of defense against erosion, coastal flooding, and storms.
Spain’s Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge has singled out this protective role in shielding and conserving coastal areas. Yet despite their importance, dune systems rank among the most threatened habitats in Europe—more than half of those assessed by the European Environment Agency are in unfavorable conservation conditions.
Dunes on the front line
Wind carries sand from the beach inland, where natural obstacles cause it to pile up. Vegetation is what makes the process work. Plants like beachgrass tolerate salt spray, drought, and partial burial, and their roots and stems trap sand grains, helping build and stabilize the dune. These systems support biodiversity specially adapted to harsh conditions. Insects, reptiles, and birds all find shelter through the mix of shifting sand, damp hollows, and stabilized dunes.
Dunes serve as the coast’s first line of defense against waves, storms, and erosion. They function as sand banks that can feed eroding beaches and absorb wave energy, cutting down the impact on boardwalks, homes, and infrastructure.
Their conservation pays off for people too. Dunes help maintain beaches, support landscapes with major tourism value, and offer a kind of natural protection that can flex and adapt in ways rigid infrastructure can’t.
Some of the world’s most iconic dune systems show off this dual ecological and economic role. The dunes of Sossusvlei, in Namib-Naukluft National Park on Africa’s west coast, are one of the Namib Desert’s biggest tourist draws. The Dune of Pilat in France, the tallest coastal dune in Europe, pulls in millions of visitors a year while protecting the coastal ecosystem of the Arcachon Bay. And the gypsum dunes of White Sands National Park in New Mexico, USA, shelter species found nowhere else.
These examples make clear that dune systems carry enormous ecological and scenic value, and they generate real economic benefits tied to nature's tourism and heritage conservation. The catch is that it doesn't take much to set back years of that progress: stepping off a marked trail, pulling up vegetation, or disrupting the natural flow of sediment can accelerate degradation fast.
A protected system
Spain has numerous projects underway to bring these ecosystems back. One of the most recent examples is in La Manga del Mar Menor, where the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge has just wrapped up the first phase of a dune restoration covering 33,000 square meters in the municipality of San Javier, Murcia.
The project has created about 3,800 square meters of new dunes by putting stranded Neptune seagrass wrack to use, planted 10,923 native specimens across 5,000 square meters, and cleared 3,900 square meters of invasive vegetation. Crews rounded out the work with sand-trapping fences and wood-and-rope barriers to keep people and vehicles off the newly regenerated areas.
On Gran Canaria, the Masdunas project has been working since 2018 to halt the decline of the Maspalomas Dunes Special Nature Reserve. Its measures include organizing visitor routes, returning sand to the system, and restoring native plant life. The project has added roughly 60,000 cubic meters of sand and planted more than 1,060 specimens of sea sandwort, a species that helps trap sediment and drive dune regeneration. Thanks to these efforts, the native plant population has grown by 75%.
Conserving dunes means more than protecting a strip of sand. It means keeping an entire natural system running. That’s why simple steps like sticking to boardwalks, respecting roped-off areas, and avoiding trampling the plants can go a long way toward preserving that balance. The point isn’t to look at dunes as scenery. It’s to recognize that the health of our coastlines—their biodiversity, their beaches, their ability to withstand erosion and help buffer the effects of climate change—depends on the health of the dunes themselves.
