Our proactivity is the most important aspect of our work to protect the marine environment. We place particular focus on prevention through safety systems, continuous controls and specific training for our professionals, among others. Besides this, we develop research projects and prevention and response systems that allow us to act quickly in the event of a spill.
We are leading the development of an intelligent network of fiber optic sensors to detect potential leaks in our offshore facilities. By doing this, we will be able to immediately activate the action protocols and control the effects of the spill at sea.
This project has been co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund under the Intelligent Growth Operating Program 2014-2020, which aims to bolster research, technological development and innovation.

We have installed a pioneering prevention and response system at our three refineries. Using a powerful online tool we control the operations at our terminals and we calculate the trajectory of the spill in real time in the case of any marine contamination.
We are moving forward to develop this new and advanced prevention and response system, covering potential cases of sea and air chemicals contamination (SNPP). Our facilities will have an App that will facilitate the decision-making process in our terminals by assessing the risk of the operations at all times, providing action protocols and response strategies, and, in the event of contamination, modeling the trajectory of the spill both at sea and in the atmosphere.
This project is funded by the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities through the 2017 Challenges-Collaboration program of the State Program for Research, Development, and Innovation Focused on Society’s Challenges, under the framework of the 2013-2016 State Plan for Scientific and Technical Research and Innovation with file number RTC-2017-6642-2.
