Rosendo Rivero, director of San Roque Energy Park, highlighted "the commitment of all Moeve's professionals in Campo de Gibraltar and the Environmental team when working on this documentation. We are going to great lengths to reduce our water footprint and water consumption. To achieve this, we have focused on water recirculation in our processes and projects and have also developed a new plant that allowed us to recirculate a total of 1.1 million m3 in 2024. Reusing water and reducing our consumption, both in our current processes and in new projects, is a key point for the San Roque Energy Park. This statement is yet another step forward in the energy transition undertaken by Moeve and its customers, which will give Campo de Gibraltar and Andalusia a key role in European energy independence."
Javier López Pupo, director of Moeve Chemicals Puente Mayorga, has stated that the 2024 EMAS environmental statement reflects "the intense work carried out at our facilities. This task continues the evolution we began when we transformed into Moeve, to become a company that is increasingly committed to sustainability, decarbonization, and the future of our society. We have continued to work towards the objectives set in the Positive Motion strategy by making progress on new products from the Next range produced at our facility, such as the new NextLab Low Carbon for Europe and Asia, a product that will make it possible to produce detergents with a lower carbon footprint than traditional methods."
Improvements in climate and water management
Both industrial centers complied with the atmospheric emissions limits established in the Integrated Environmental Authorizations. In the case of the San Roque Energy Park, sulfur dioxide (SO2) emissions were at the lowest levels seen in the historical series.
The company has a circular economy roadmap certified by AENOR that is based on minimizing freshwater withdrawal, maximizing the use of waste as a raw material, minimizing the amount of waste sent to controlled landfills, and protecting biodiversity. In this regard, the San Roque Energy Park managed to recirculate 25.8% of its water withdrawal in 2024 and 21.7% compared to 2022. Meanwhile the chemical plant reduced water consumption by 1.9% compared to 2023, and by 19.2% compared to figures from three years ago.
The Energy Park's water treatment plant also treats water effluents from Moeve Chemicals Puente Mayorga. The environmental statement indicated that in 2024, 2.3 million m3were discharged through the submarine outfall, well below the authorized maximum; resulting in a 31.7% reduction in the annual discharge compared to 2022.
In terms of waste management, the San Roque Energy Park reduced the amount of waste generated by 19.2% over three years, while Puente Mayorga achieved a 30% decrease in the same period.
What's more, in San Roque, Moeve is working to be more efficient in terms of energy consumption to mitigate the environmental footprint of processes. The facilities are certified as per the ISO 50001 standard, which aims to promote energy efficiency, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and increase the use of surplus energy.
As shown in both statements, which were audited by AENOR, the San Roque Energy Park and Moeve Chemicals Puente Mayorga achieved a single certification for the environmental management system, as per the ISO 14001 standard. In addition, the EMAS Environmental Statement was validated. This declaration is an environmental management tool that stems from voluntary European Union regulations, recognizing organizations that have implemented a management system and made a commitment to continuous improvement, as verified through independent audits. The purpose of joining the EMAS, a voluntary audit scheme from the European Union, is to provide the public and other stakeholders with information on the environmental performance of the various industrial centers. In addition, this is part of Moeve's commitment to assess, manage, and improve sustainability performance. The environmental report for the San Roque Energy Park maritime terminal has also been verified in compliance with the Good Environmental Practices Guide published by Puertos del Estado.
The environmental statements also contain information on other aspects, ranging from noise control and management of air emissions to training and awareness-raising activities for our own personnel, always available to the public, institutions, and organizations.
Through its Fundación Moeve, which was created in 2016, Moeve works proactively to protect and improve biodiversity in the areas surrounding its production centers, such as the initiative to restore and enhance the Madrevieja Environmental Station in San Roque, a natural space with preserved wetlands where environmental education activities and biodiversity projects are carried out. The Madrevieja Environmental Station has received more than 14,700 visitors since it opened to the public more than ten years ago and has launched projects to recover species such as the barn owl and the European pond turtle.
